Fixed & Removable Dentures

Dentures are artificial replacements for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. They come in various types, each designed to meet different needs depending on the extent of tooth loss and the patient's preferences. Here's an overview of the main types of dentures, along with explanations of fixed partial and removable partial dentures, including their advantages. Types of Dentures Complete Dentures: These replace all teeth in the upper or lower jaw (or both). They are typically made from acrylic or other durable materials and are held in place by suction or denture adhesive. Partial Dentures: These are used when some natural teeth remain in the upper or lower jaw. They consist of a metal or plastic framework that supports artificial teeth. The framework may attach to the natural teeth with clasps or precision attachments. Fixed Partial Dentures Fixed partial dentures, also known as "fixed bridges" or just "bridges," are dental appliances that replace one or more missing teeth. They are anchored to the adjacent natural teeth or dental implants, which act as supports (abutments). The artificial tooth (or teeth) in between is called the "pontic." Advantages of Fixed Partial Dentures Stability and Comfort: Since fixed bridges are anchored, they don't move around, providing a more natural feel and greater comfort. Aesthetics: Fixed bridges often look more like natural teeth and can be customized to match the color and shape of your existing teeth. Functionality: They provide excellent chewing efficiency and can improve speech. Durability: With proper care, fixed bridges can last many years, providing a long-term solution for tooth loss. Removable Partial Dentures Removable partial dentures (RPDs) replace some missing teeth and can be removed by the wearer for cleaning or sleeping. They have a framework that attaches to the remaining natural teeth with clasps or precision attachments. The base of the denture is typically made of acrylic, with artificial teeth mounted on it. Advantages of Removable Partial Dentures Flexibility: RPDs can be removed for cleaning, making them easier to maintain and allowing for better oral hygiene. Cost-Effective: Generally, RPDs are more affordable than fixed bridges or complete dentures. Conservative: RPDs do not require extensive alterations to the surrounding teeth, unlike fixed bridges, which may require crowns or other modifications for support. Adaptability: If more teeth are lost, RPDs can often be adjusted or extended to accommodate the changes. In summary, the choice between fixed partial dentures and removable partial dentures depends on individual needs, preferences, and oral health. Fixed bridges offer stability, comfort, and a natural appearance, while removable partial dentures provide flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and adaptability.
